Description
chesapeake | After his son Tony was killed by a sniper in Iraq three years ago, George Lutz immersed himself in things - any link to his loss that he could touch, feel, squeeze between his fingers, gaze at in the bathroom mirror. |||| He published a book of photographs of Tony's life for his grandchildren. Wore personalized dog tags and a metal memorial bracelet. Ordered license plates that read "4Tony" and "Tony4U." He recovered the singed bullet that ended Tony's life. |||| "I wanted to embrace everything I could that had anything to do with his past memory," Lutz said. "All of these things were important." |||| After many months, he had collected as much as he could - e-mails, letters, cards and videotapes. Was the memory of Tony's life fading to everyone but him? |||| Lutz sought a lasting public display - a flag. A symbol that everyone could fly, every day, to remind the country of the sacrifice of Tony and other service members. |||| He called veterans groups but found no suitable flag . He conceived an idea and his family encouraged him. He would make his own. |||| With help from friends, he designed and produced a flag honoring those fallen in service to their country. |||| Lutz launched the Honor and Remember campaign on Memorial Day. Its goal is to present personalized flags to parents who have lost a son or daughter in military service. |||| "I wrestled with God over this thing," he said. "I never wanted to start a campaign." Continued on Page 8 One evening in October, the front parking lot and showroom of Southside Harley-Davidson were filled with leather and denim-clad bikers. A friend had arranged for Lutz to speak to the monthly meeting of the Tidewater Harley Owners Group.
